Free diver swims with sharks for FLOW
The press release for our World Water Day event…
CAPE TOWN – On March 22 2010, to celebrate World Water Day and to launch the FLOW (for love of water) awareness campaign, Greenhouse, the Two Oceans Aquarium and Pick n Pay hosted a free magical evening of film, performance and music with the theme “I am for love of water?”
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. This year’s theme was ‘Clean Water for a healthy world’.
The FLOW event brought business, government, city, NPO’s and general public together to highlight the water issues facing both South Africa and the planet as a whole. “The human body is on average 70% water and 70% of the world’s surface is covered by water – if we can be aware of this on a day to day basis it will affect the way we treat ourselves, each other and the planet for the better.” Says Justin Friedman, director of Greenhouse and creator of FLOW.
“For Love of Water (FLOW) is a national awareness campaign to help instill a deep appreciation, understanding and respect for water. It aims to raise awareness of water quality and quantity challenges on both a local and national level while providing practical solutions to ensure that all are provided with clean safe drinking water. This event was our opportunity to bring together various stakeholders and like minded people to ignite the conversation, and conservation, of our water resources.”
The evening began with the screening of the international documentary called FLOW – Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century – The World Water Crisis. This was followed by a Q&A with David Hemson from the HSRC (Human Science Research Council) who was featured in the documentary.
The discussion highlighted the need for increased awareness of water issues and the solutions to them – a role FLOW intends to fulfill.
The event culminated with a spectacular live performance in the I&J Predator Exhibit. After a short spoken meditation on the power of one breath to carry us through the water, Hanli Prinsloo (SA Freediving Champion) of I Am Water Freediving took to the water, swimming amongst the sharks and rays as naturally as if she were one of them. As Hanli swam Ms Fitz (Zolani Mahola) sang and played solo before being joined by fellow Freshlyground member Kyla-Rose Smith on violin. Zolani then left the stage leaving Kyla-Rose to complete her solo performance with a large turtle moving closer to listen. The performance continued to flow in this way with duet and solo performances by Guy Buttery on guitar, Ronan Skillen on the tabla and didge and then Donovan Copley (Hot Water) on the Hang instrument and guitar. The evening ended with an ensemble piece performed by all the musicians.
“This event was made possible by the generosity of so many individuals, organizations and companies. All the performers donated their time, the Two Oceans Aquarium provided the venue and support staff and Pick n Pay purchased all the tickets allowing the event to be provided free to the public. We hope this flow of participation and good intention leads to a torrent of action around the issue of water. A full list of those who contributed is shown on the website www.flow.org.za.” concluded Friedman.
